lifer has only been together since the spring of 1999. In as a little as three years, the band has accomplished many feats that most bands only dream about. Gaining national exposure on MTV in February of 2000, inking a recording contract only months after that, and playing with such bands as Cold, Nonpoint, Godsmack, Disturbed and a whole slew of others. Their self titled debut album has been rising on the charts since it became available on August 14th, 2001. With the help of touring the country along side Cold and Dope soon after its release and radio airplay of the first single, Boring, lifer has amassed a wealth of new fans and rocketed the album into the top 50 metal records for weeks.
lifer debut album is not the average "nu-metal" record that the music industry is seeing way too much of these days. lifer hits you with slow tracked melodies such as Swallow and No Need, tears away at your brain with tracks such as Ugly and Disbelief, and make you lose your mind with Heave and My Room. Their songs range along the whole spectrum, not limiting themselves to one style. They walk along the lines of angry and melodic with such fine grace. Listening to all thirteen tracks on the album is such a pleasureable and mind blowing experience.
One of the main reasons why lifer is where they are at now is because of the Ultimate Cover Band Contest on MTV in the beginning of 2000 under the name Strangers With Candy. They played 45 seconds of Guerilla Radio, Take on Me, Jump Around, and stole the show with a serious rip of Limp Bizkit's Nookie, which brought them the title. After winning, their shows grew and fans kept pushing for a release of original tunes. They delivered a 7 song EP entitled No Need in late March of 2000. The cd quickly sold and rose to number 4 on the Northeast PA charts.
Despite what everyone may think, the MTV contest did not get lifer a record deal. Sure, it opened up opportunities and got the attention of several labels. But in the end, it was the EP that Universal Records loved so much and that is why they decided to ink lifer to a deal.
lifer had to play the name game before anything started though. To avoid any complications with the Comedy Central show, the band decided it was best to change their name from Strangers With Candy. After submitting a couple names to the label for trademark tests, the name Driver came back clean and they decided to use that. The bands first national recording ended up on an album called Take a Bite Outta Rhyme, where rock artists redid popular rap and hip hop songs. Driver covered the great Grandmaster Flash's White Lines. But soon after its release, complications arose from a band called Driver in the Allentown, PA area. It seemed as if that band applied for the trademark five days before our boys did. They offered them money so that they can use it, but that band refused. So, onto another name. They decided on lifer because Nick was in band with that name a while ago and he owned more of the copyrights to it.
lifer is definitely one of the better nu-metal bands on the market today. Their music is stylistic, creative, and a lot different from the steretypical nu-metal album on the racks today. Nick will delve deep into your mind with his passionate lyrics and the crew of Aaron and Chris give him monster riffs, while Tony uses the occaisional scratch to add a little bit of color. This is the band that you have been waiting for, and they are finally here. |
